For importing and exporting some audio file formats such as mp3 you need to have ffmpeg and/or lame installed. You can get both from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

If you have four tracks one above the other, they will play at the same time unless you prevent them. The Solo and Mute buttons on the left do this.
Solo kills all other tracks (you can select more than one).
Mute kills that track.

Help! tracks playing simultaneously
I don't know how it happened but I have 4 lengthy tracks of music and they are all playing simultaneously. I tried using the time line arrow and it is taking forever. there must be an easier way? I must have clicked on something in error. Made several recordings without problems.

... the best description of this process I've heard in a long time. If you're on a newer Windows machine -- Vista or Win7 -- the computer will try to help you by automatically adjusting the microphone characteristics. Of course, it leaves them that way when you're done. That and recording Mix-Out ...

... stereo mix output, the track I record is much, much louder than the actual output, distorting the sound. Adjusting the recording volume doesn't help. If anyone has any suggestions I will be eternally grateful.
