Make sure that Sound Activated Recording is not checked in the Transport menu.

I have finally found the file. reset it. Yes it moves, I see a blue line but still cant record audio. Im on windows xp....Whats going on..? It worked perfectly before. starting to wish I never upgraded...AAARRRGGGGH..

Have you got your Windows Explorer set so that it doesn't show hidden files and folders - and note this is the somewhat unhelpful default that Microsoft ships in Windows?
If so reset it is to show the hidden files/folders - I suspect the .cfg file may be such a file.

The problem is i cant find the audacity.cfg file any where. can you tell me where it is kept. i have tried looking. Maybe im being dumb, not very PC minded......

Probably best to reset your preferences back to the default values before proceeding.
