Stereo Mix not working

I need to set my colleague up with an easy way to record voice overs on her Windows laptop...
Will Audacity allow her to record a VO with an external mic?
If, so what kind of file does it create?

... because ive never done that before. i currently have 123GB of 218GB on my C drive and 5.27GB of 14.6GB on my D drive. thanks very much for the help, its very much appreciated. I will do a bit of recording tomorrow evening after cleaning the computer up and will post with the results!

You've posted in the Audacity 1.2 part of the forum. Are you really using that version?
Look in the Audacity Help menu > About Audacity. What version does it say?
