You can follow these instructions to reset the 1.3.13 preferences to defaults (uninstalling does not do this). I'm not convinced it would help. What Playback device are you using in Audacity Devices Preferences? Do you have headphones connected to that device, or are they built-in speakers? ...

Seems to me my desktop doesn't work, any help. For one I put the cable jack in my headphone output. Also my keyboard is appearing as a headphone.

Can you plug the wall power supply into the wall upside down? That might help. Many wall power modules can be plugged in either direction and they hum more one way than the other. You might also test your outlets. What you have is not normal and may be dangerous. ...

All the tests worked! Audacity did show up in Pulse Audio Volume Control. I set it to capture from Monitor of SBAudigy Analog Stereo and it recorded from the sound card, just what I wanted. :D After that, I played a song from within my browser and that worked now too. Audacity did show up and record...

I have just tested this in version 1.3.14-alpha-Jun 18 2011 (Unicode) / Windows XP3
All appears OK now.

... preferences, we have experimented with Interface>Meter/Waveform db range. with no real difference. What should that be set on. Thanks for your help. I feel that we are really close, but I cant figure out what's missing.

Thanks Steve, I downloaded the manual, and will review later. I know I had the manual switch set to Lo and the levels from the menu set to 50 (down from 100). Reviewing the signal strengths it looked like the sound was peaking below max, therefore I assumed the audio would be ok - my mistake. Thanks...

Which version of Audacity are you using? (look in "Help menu > About Audacity" - the full version name will be something like: "Audacity ® 1.3.14-alpha-Jun 14 2011 (Unicode)")
