In Audacity, click Help > Audio Device Info. Click in the list, CTRL + A to select all, then CTRL + C to copy, then paste into your reply. In the "Recording" tab of "Sound" in the Windows Control Panel, hold ALT ...

Windows comes out of the box trying to help you perform an audio conference. This is the last thing you want if you're trying to do a straight music recording.

... the tracks all go in okay but underneath each other (when I press play they all start!)whereas I want them to run consecutively. How do I do this? Help!

you just need to select that one second portion and the hit the delete key (helps if you are zoomed in a long way). This may give you a dis-joint at that postion - you can help to avoid that by searching for the zero crossings (Use Edit > Find Zero Crossings ) ...
