The easy way:

• Applications menu >Ubuntu Software Centre
• Type Audacity into the search box.
• Click on the Audacity icon
• Click on the "Install" button.

Bingo! I had to chose the settings
Conexant AMC Audio
USB Audio Codec.
During recording there is now sound from both laptop speakers or earphones. Great!

... machine -- Vista or Win7. They're corporate communications computers, not entertainment producers. Changing the microphone will probably not help.
