If you are really using Audacity 1.2, try 1.3.13 Beta (works on OS X 10.4 or later).
It's not very likely to help directly, but if you are on OX 10.6 or 10.7, 1.2 is not very stable.

I doubt that changing the page size will help. As soon as the system starts swapping data between ram and hard drive then you are already into major slowdown. You may be able to get some improvement if you optimise your computer so that there ...
