You didn't give us enough information. What are you trying to record and from where? Mic? Line-in? Internal soundcard? External USB ...

Has the hard drive been defragmented lately? If not, then doing so may help. Also check that there is plenty of free disk space (if Audacity is having to hunt around for space to write the audio data then that can cause small gaps in the audio that can sound ...

... to compile Audacity for yourself, I have added shortcuts for some of the built-in effects and know how to do it in general. I would be happy to help you with this. Adding shortcuts to Nyquist effects is a bit tricky and restrictive but can be done as well.
