Hi again Koz,
OK, wav files do play fine in Quicktime.
Does that help at all?
I have LameLib on my computer
All has been working fine for years until yesterday.
If you have any ideas I'd be very happy to hear them.

Trouble recording

record plays has noise, in Audacity just thin blue line & nothing else. Turned volume up on player , nothing, turned volume up in audacity still only thin blue. No recording in audacity.

If you really are using Audacity 1.2 (you posted in the 1.2 forum) then you should probably stop. Audacity 1.2 doesn't get along well with modern Macs. If you install Audacity 1.3 and get the FFMpeg add-on, then you might be able to open the M4A files directly. Trash this preference file: Go > Home ...

Can you open them in QuickTime Player?
Control-Click > Open With > QuickTime
