... For Win 7 the correct Audacity version is 1.3.13 which you can download from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ I don't know if this will help your current problem, but if you have Audacity 1.2.6 then upgrading to 1.3.13 will avoid a number of other problems.

Which exact version of Audacity are you using? (look in "Help > About Audacity" for the 3 part version number)

Does a waveform show on the track before you press stop?
