What are you trying to record?
What equipment are you using?
How is the equipment connected to the computer?
Which version of Audacity are you using? (the three part number, for example "1.3.13". Look in "Help > About Audacity" for the version number)

you shouldn't have needed to buy it in the first place as it has always been available for free download: http://audacityteam.org/download/

1.3.14 is curently the latest Audacity - but keep an eye out for 2.0 which may be released shortly.

... get enough volume with the playback selector up full. Playback is very low with my speaker up full. Input and output volume are my main problem ! Help ! Another broblem is with "tutorials" that don't match the Audacity equipment that I have. It takes a lot of guess-work to control things.

You've missed some numbers off. The Audacity version has three parts (e.g. 1.3.10)
The last part of the number is important.
