Windows 7 has a conferencing service that tries to help you with level setting and audio processing. You should look for it and turn it off.

... bit, but that might just be me. the stuff that gets recorded in this "phase" it seems to get in is almost completely un-saveable, so and help would be greatly appreciated. my setup is two "analog" mics plugged into an audio splitter and then plugged into a laptop (windows 7) ...

You're working way too hard. Change iTunes settings to import a Music CD as WAV and it won't try to translate, compress, and damage the music. It will leave the music the WAV format that it was on the CD (but it will take up a lot more room). Then you can open the music and do production in Audacity...

Ordinary Audacity doesn't understand fancy music file formats. To do that, you have to download and install the FFMpeg software from here...

I have version 1.3.13 Beta. Is this version ok? Or do I need to download 1.3.14? If so where do I obtain the 1.3.14 beta version? 1.3.13 has a built-in Manual too, if you installed 1.3.13 rather than using the zip. Great stuff.
So with my 4 minute song I slow it down by 66.66667%.
Video it and mime to it at that speed.
I then speed the video up by 200%
Replace my normal 4 minute audio over the top and alls hunky dorey?
