i can see the sound is there on the little sound o meter as i am putting it in, and i can see it not appearing on the track, or occasionally appearing and then gradually degrading and sputtering out as it would if the mic lead was dying. which is what made me think 'ah, the usb'. nigh on certainly, ...

If you want to sing or talk live over an existing sound track, that's called Multitrack or Overdubbing. We wrote a good piece on how to do that with several different techniques. mmm hmm. tbh i quite like having them in the speakers. the end product is gonna come out of the speakers, that's where i wanna hear the recording, then i know how close it is to the end product.
