That's Overdubbing/Multitrack. We wrote a piece about doing that. There are special things you can do to some Windows sound cards to help with machine latency. Scroll down. Recording latency you can tune out in Audacity 1.3 and later, but machine latency is generally fixed by the hardware. ...

Lag with real time playing
... Now I would say, there is always some latency, but my computer did not do this before. I could hear the notes in real time, now I can not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

... You can see that everything below 400 Hz has been heavily cut, and there is a boost above 4000 Hz. So cutting the high frequencies alone won't help. Try this as a starting point. You'll never make it sound like a voice in an everyday pop song, but after this EQ it is somewhat less grating. ...
