The "Trim" button would have done exactly what you say happened.
Have you quit Audacity since this happened? If not there may be some information at Help > Show Log... .
Is the project itself where this happened still open, if so, do look at View > History... .

Unbalanced L and R tracks, L is on 0 and R in clipping
