Problem solved.
I reconnected cartridge and checked through amp, stereo sound. I left the computer for 24hrs and started again. All working fine. So could have been the cartridge or the infamous I.T. Solution of turning it on and off.

no that doesnt help. That just turns everything up or everthing down. Its all relative to each other.

Have you set Audacity in Device Toolbar to record from "USB Audio Codec" or similar (that is, the mixer)? If the USB Audio Codec is not visible, choose Transport > Rescan Audio Devices from the Audacity menu.
