... is set correctly and all the other services on the machine work perfectly...but Audacity is silent. Reinstalling -- correctly -- doesn't help. By the way, this problem exists over multiple time zones, so nobody is jumping in the car to resolve this and the actual user with the problem ...

What name did you give to the project?
Where did you try to save it to?
Does the .AUP file exist where you tried to save it?
Does a _data folder exist?

... connected to the mic jack at the front of the computer. When I clicked on configure and then backed out cause I didn't see anything which might help the device disappeared. I'm not very tech savvy but have had great success with Audacity on other computers. Any help would be appreciated.

Win7 and I think Vista try to "help you" by processing your voice for conferencing. You generally don't want that for entertainment recording (singing, guitar, etc.) so you have to turn that off while you record.

ive been using audacity for a year now and something went horribly wrong. i lost all my internal effects. i reallllllllllyyyyyyyyy need them back. i tried deleting amy audacity.app, then reinstalling and that didnt work. HELP
