... first time round, then behaves as above. The error makes me think that it is tied up with the operating system rather than Audacity. Can anyone help?

I'm afraid I can't help with AutoHotKey as I've not used it in years and I'm not even using Windows. The Nyquist section is one of the quieter corners of the forum, so you may do better to start a new topic in the General Audio Programming ...
