... my mic (usually hw0). When I attempt to record there isn't any input. I must be missing something, but I'm a total noob with all this. Any help would be much appreciated, looking forward to recording using Audacity, simple, effective and awesome.

Those are actually Hot Keys for something else. Which version of Audacity do you have? I think it's Help > About Audacity. Something like that. Koz

I'm having problems with recording. I follow the instructions in my booklet, but when I want to hear what I just recorded, I can't hear anything. I have Windows 7 and I have an "Innovative Technology" turntable. Thanks for all your help.

It may capture more than that. You are experiencing the sound waves after the wall has had a chance to move the air in your house. Putting the microphone on the wall should record not only that sound, but also the overtones that normally wouldn't transmit to the air. I still bet you find compressor ...
