Ok - I FEEL like an idiot. Figured out the problem. My desktop computer doesn't have a microphone - downloaded audacity on a laptop - works great! thank you sooo much for your help/patience. Have a great weekend!

No, I am using the laptop's speakers for playback. Since I was not using a microphone, I assumed headphones would not help. Am I wrong?

If you are using the current version of Audacity, automatic recovery will usually be successful the next time you launch Audacity. Which version of Audacity are you using? (look in "Help > About Audacity")

During recording remotely using Skype (Stereo Mix option IDþ) when the speaker is silent Audacity stops recording, so recording is not recording pauses. Maybe I inadvertently activated some option?
