You can do a very respectable job of sound on a mono cassette. Use both left and right and the guard band in the middle for recording sound. The ffffff noise level goes way down and the sparkly fidelity goes up. Koz

Back in the dark ages, we did news interviews on portable Sony cassette machines. Successful, too. The machines were mono. If you plug a stereo headset in, only the left side would work.
