thanks for the help. I adjusted the sound recording and playback as suggested but this didn't stop the distortion. I have uninstalled Skype. Now, using the generic microphone settings, the sound is normal but to get the correct volume ...

... Audacity, does not sound clean, wouldn't this indicate a problem with the the way Audacity is processing the incoming signal during recording? Any help you can give is gratefully appreciated. Thanks! - E.

It's easy to get sound routing all turned around. We should probably wait for one of the Windows people to help. If your testing tools don't work right, then you may just go round and round in circles.
