... the only way I have found to do this is open each file manually and do a detect silence, then export multiple. Would take forever. Thanks for your help!

The easiest one-step tool is Chris's Compressor. http://theaudacitytopodcast.com/chriss-dynamic-compressor-plugin-for-audacity/ This works like the audio processors at the radio station to level everything out.
