WAV will preserve the distortion in lossless quality, MP3 will make it worse. Don't record the drum set connected to the mic input unless you know it can be switched to line level input. The mic input will be adding unwanted low quality amplification, even if you can stop it actually going over 0 dB...

Well, after again downloading the manual, I opened Audacity, and from the help menu clicked on the manual, (as I already have Safari open anyway), and now it's opened the manual up in Firefox! What is going on? How many browsers need to open to just see the manual, ...

Question about recording, gain and overloading

... the squeek, then Analyze -> Plot Spectrum and maybe you can see the frequency that needs to be filtered-out. It won't be perfect, but it might help. If the noise is louder than the speaking, compression may help a little. (Compression tends to make quiet parts louder and/or loud parts quieter.) ...

... is usually an indication that data is being dropped because some part of the system can't keep up. Reducing the load on the computer may help, particularly if the computer is not very powerful. What options do you have selected in the device toolbar ?
