Reducing this to its basics, most laptops have a Mic-In designed to accept a connection from a microphone. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/computerAnalogMicrophone.jpg You can't connect anything else. So how are you connecting the "anything else" (Lexicon, effects unit, disco mixer, etc...

Big picture --- I'm assuming that there are some basic EQ, compression, filtering (etc) options that will help enhance the background voices and/or suppress the foreground music. That's what I'd like some advice on. I've looked and some of the many "effect" options ...

holy shit, that was awesome! can u share how you actually declipped that? doesnt matter if it isnt audacity. Now that i understand clipping, i know that the data has been lost, because i set too much mic gain on my phone, not knowing the end result would be like this. and its impossible to get back ...

... recording and the tools make more sense to me that Windows drivers and Virtual Audio Cables and USB, etc. Thanks again, everyone for the help. It's been a hard lesson but I think it's positioned us to produce better audio and have more control over these things in the future.
