Audio-out stopped working on mavericks

I decided to practice this whole process by making a ringtone; all of the help you offered did work and I was able to trim a 4 second properly eq'd tone onto a transferable track. It's in my "Music" file on iTunes in m4r, I can look at it, play it, ...

... recording on devices that support that. It has a lot of advantages. Assuming 2.0.5 does not have this issue, could you post the information from Help > Audio Device Info... top right of Audacity, without changing any of the devices you were using for 2.0.4? Thanks Gale
