... generous space on a fast drive. You can edit a long, complex show on a spinning hard drive, but an SSD can be significantly faster. Any of that help at all? Koz

I found the .cfg file and deleted it. That seems to have done the trick. Just done over an hour of work on my track without any audio problems.
I guess we can consider this problem solved now. I'll keep what you've said in mind in case it happens again.

... using 3.99.3, even though you "told it" to use the other one. (Audacity "tries" to load a version that works). If you look in Help > Show Log... it may shed some light on it. Gale

Thank you, I ended up using my computer's basic troubleshooter for the microphone and lo and behold, we have music.

... very short and the "Audio to buffer" setting is disregarded. For recordings where you don't want to listen to a previous track, does it help to turn "Overdub" off in that menu? If you need more help with 2.0.5, please post the information from Help > Audio Device Info... . ...

I got rid of the really distorted ones, but hoping to salvage the ones that only barely touched the "red" sometimes. Have you used Normalize to bring the peaks down to say -6 dB? That may make the problem a little less audible. If the tracks have "flat topped" waveform, they hav...
