All microphones produce a bit of noise. The "absolute" amount of noise is irrelevant. The important thing is how much noise is there in relation to the audio signal - that is, the "signal to noise ratio" (SNR). If the audio signal is hugely greater than the amount of noise, then...

not recording anything

... show imputing sound. must be the computer mic. how can I change this. To be more specific I am using a behringer xenyx502 mixing board. someone help this not so tech savvy person so I can make some podcast!

Hi, I recently bought an AT2020 USB Mic, and have this annoying background white noise/hiss. I'm unsure what to do. No matter how quiet the house gets, it's always there. I will continue to try the method you described. It is exactly what I do to capture cassette tape analog signals while digitizing them and later exporting them as MP3.

The latest versions of Audacity have "screen-shot tools" in the "help" menu.
You can use those tools to capture a frequency-analysis graph as a png image, (see attached).
