Get rid of the noise!

How do I go about getting rid of the unwanted noise, scratches, and cracks that are transferred onto the audacity program from my, well, noisy, scratchy, and crackling tapes and records?

Thank you for your help in this matter.

... & perfect tape. The entire recording plays fine from beginning to end. Ya know, I've about had it with Audacity. I appreciate all of the help I've received from all of you, but why do I have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to edit? NCH sound editor is so much better. Click, ...

Joining two tracks of different volume

Hi

I hope someone can help - I am trying to create a backing track comprising several tracks. I understand how to do that but two of the tracks that come from CD's are recorded at different volumes - how do I change the volumes so that they are the same?

Many thanks

Re: Playback

... Mixer. Play a song in Audacity. Go back to the Windows Volume Mixer and ensure the Audacity slider is turned up and unmuted. If that does not help, try rebooting the computer. Gale

Re: Playback

Make sure Audacity is still set to
Host: MME
Recording device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input
Playback device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output

Post the Help > Audio Device Info... again with Audacity set as above.

... the Audacity default). Once you have a good quality recording, then you have control over what you do to it when converting to low quality (we can help with that). At the moment the complaint is that one muffled recording sounds worse than another muffled recording, but because they are both muffled ...

... the sound is inferior on the Windows 7 machine. I will stick to one microphone only while we figure this out. Thank you all again for the help. I will try to reduce the level to see if that helps, but from what I recall, there is still bass, it just sounded more distant.

Re: Separating Tracks for CD.

Thank you for your help, Koz. Ha---I don't know what AudioMeter is either! It's name is actually Metadata. And it's where I entered the individual track data---but I never got any further than the first track. I'm attempting what you ...

Re: Recovering .au files after crash

Here is the crash report:
Audacity_2014-11-19-115753_Ericks-MacBook-Pro.crash
(43.71 KiB) Downloaded 35 times
I'm afraid the AU files are reporting as "infinity" I'm assuming all hope is lost at this point? Is there a reason why Audacity would silence without asking?

Really appreciate all the help.
