Would a full harddrive have anything to do with that? It was happening when my harddrive was full. I had to manually go into the temp folder and delete everything. Yes having no disk space would corrupt the project, but not normally in such large discrete chunks. If you open Audacity's Directories ...

I almost feel like forgetting the mic and going with an XLR to USB converter, but if it's the system... Since we are pretty sure it's power supply noise, a good quality USB Audio Interface that's not USB powered should be an improvement. You could try buying a regulated "linear" power sup...
