... recording device I use one of the options available - Microphone 2-USB PnP audio. Microsoft Sound Mapper will do too. I'd really appreciate any help to prevent the record meter from creating beats of its own which are then superimposed on whatever is recorded.

having problems saving my file to mp3

Thanks for your help. I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it.
What I seem to be missing now is the "Output level meter." See, screenshot. I saw it once, but I can't recall what my configuration was when it made its appearance.
