I've just done it again and it has worked. Audacity 2.1.1 has now loaded a file that crashed the previous version. Thanks for your help.

Please, give us your Audacity version number (all three numbers). It is in Help > About Audacity... . It seems I already understood the problem correctly from your first explanation. The solution is therefore as I already stated: use Tracks > Mix and Render before ...

This security precaution is likely to be made permanent.

Either compile Audacity HEAD rather than 2.1.2, or make these changes to scripts/mw2html_audacity/mw2html.py: https://github.com/audacity/audacity/commit/cfcb876.
