... you are choosing the "pulse" or "default" recording device in Audacity. If you are not choosing pulse, doing so might possibly help. As I said, reinstalling Audacity 2.0.5 seems to have solved the problem ... I hope it does not reappear. Thank you again for your help.

is it possible to run Audacity without the GUI? If not, is there a way to make Audacity connect to Jack directly, without Port Audio?
I think either or both of these would help me a bit with a performance issue.
