Well lets say this is a forum where people seek help in using Audacity in improving the audio content. What is the best way to filter out background noise and amplify low tones, say like voices? Thank you in advance to anyone who offers useful advice.

... my voice and sounds great. But a music recording from YouTube or Spotify has that horrible tunnel quality to it. Thanks again in advance for any help. Russ D.

Supposing you have a DMM, measure how much voltage your mic input supplies. Probably, it's 5V. That's sufficient. And you definitely need that resistor, or the power supply in your computer will eat the mic signal, lowering the audio level. That same power supply will also add noise. Add up the two,...
