I downloaded from http://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/ version 2.1.2 without the help files. Yes. I was able to peform a clean uninstall/re-install. So I've tested a few of editors now for more insight: Not working same exact error - Audacity and Wavepad Working ...

The file is corrupt.

It should look something like this when opened in a text editor:
but your AUP file looks like this:
(in some text editors it may look like an empty file. My text editor is "Scite" which displays invalid characters as "NULL")

Did you shut the computer lid before the project finished saving? That is the usual reason that AUP files can end up empty.
