Recording with another application such as GarageBand will help prove whether Audacity is part of the problem.

And that brings us to the reason the Audacity sound meters are much larger in later versions. So you can see them out the corner of your eye and not produce works that are a forest of bright red overload lines or barely visible blue waves. My joke is about watching them elbow each other out of the way. Harsh! It's not far off. I've seen a number of shooters lined up on the sidewalk jockeying to keep their neighbors out of their sight lines. Peaks 0.0 and RMS -29.1 That's a gunshot. Right-click the Windows speaker/volume icon and select Recording Devices. Hopefully, it shows-up and you can enable it. (You should be able to enable it and select it from within Audacity without selecting it as the default device.) You can also click on any devices that do show up and select "...

... errors getting more frequent? You could have something wrong like a bad optical connection. Have you pulled and reseated it on both ends? Did it help—or change the problem? ... I had in my computer was Audacity 2.1.2.0. That's not an official Audacity version number. It is, as long as you don't actually see it in "Help > About Audacity...", and as long as the last number is zero. You can see that four digit number if you hover over audacity.exe in File Explorer. ...
