I would guess you have set Refresh Rate for one of the meters to zero which causes a recurring crash (this is already fixed now in our source code). Try reinstalling Audacity but half way through installation, check (tick) the "Reset Preferences" box then confirm reset when you launch Auda...

... the folder ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/ which will have the effect of resetting all your settings to Audacity default. I doubt it will help with the problem you have. Gale

You can't do it with Audacity, either. Audacity will not apply effects or filters in real time.
