It needs to be 2.1.2. Look at Help > About Audacity... . Those buttons seem fickle. One user claimed they got it to work with those settings, which are what the Behringer Forums say to use, and one never got it to work with any combination ...

it is 2.12 - i just updated it - i put the buttons like you said, still cant hear my mic when attempting to record a vocal track with an instrument track . thanks in advance for your help....bill

Just to add. The contents of /var/folders/ is cleaned out by the Mac on rebooting. So don't reboot the Mac until you have done the recovery, or better still, copy the project folder in var/folders/ to your Documents folder or somewhere else in your user space so that it's safe.
