... mess up Audacity's ability to communicate with the device. The computer will usually reconnect to the USB device automatically, but that does not help Audacity because it is a "new" connection - in effect a new device, and Audacity does not know that this "new" device exists ...

The oldest System Restore Point it is giving me is from yesterday. This problem started a few months ago, so I don't think it will help. Right? Correct. But for future you could consider allocating more space to System Restore so that it can retain more restore points. Right-click on "Computer" ...
