Windows is trying to help you by evening out the volume and reducing "noise", which is great for Skype, and terrible for recording music.

... recording level, I don't know why. That only happens if I hold note longer. If I play short notes recording level doesn't lower. Can someone help me?

It's good to have space at each end of a recording. It allows you to trim the ends neatly without having nasty clicks and bumps at the start / end.

starting to record music and we keep getting long blank spaces before and after song has been played. Is there a way to set it up to start recording when first song starts and end when it is through playing? I am brand new to Audacity and would be thankful for any help I could get.

Thanks Gale, just tried it. It's a bit prone to crashing on Sierra, and it doesn't help with this problem, but could be a useful little app for other purposes.
