Turn OFF software playthrough. It creates a feedback loop when you record the sound coming out of your soundcard.

I don't speak Mac , but I know a little Audacity.
As a workaround try temporarily unchecking "Software playthrough of input" tickbox in Audacity preferences ...

Try WASAPI Loopback as your host & recording device. That should. be independent of volume control. With Stereo Mix, you're "capturing" whatever is coming out of your soundcard.
