Make sure that you have "Software Playthrough" switched off (not selected) in Preferences.

From your description I think what you're hearing is the "software playthrough" delay. Do you have "Software Playthrough" checked in the Transport menu? Do you get one echo or many echoes?

To answer your question, by default Audacity works from disc, not RAM.

I'm using headphones.
If it is a slow echo (around 1/2 second) you need to switch off "software playthrough" (in Audacity Preferences).
I've turned that option off. Although when I record I still can't head it though the headphones as I'm recording. I can only hear it after it's recorded.

With my Mic I can't hear via the speakers an echo of when I'm talking any ideas why? You mean ... (around 1/2 second) you need to switch off "software playthrough" (in Audacity Preferences).

When I record from streaming audio and play back the saved item it has echo. How can I turn off the echo effect
