The Samson C01U seems to be a popular inexpensive solution for simple microphone recording.
Here's a comprehensive review of them:

Re: installing to ubuntu
Open up Symantic and search for Audacity (select "Name" as the type of search). You will then see Audacity listed - click on it and select it for installation, then click on "Apply". It may be a slightly out of date version that is installed, but this is an easy way to install it (It is in the "univ...

Regenereate aup project file
Friends I have done a stupid mistake - I was careless and the aup file got overwritten. So I now have a lot of good data but no means to actually process it. A search on this forum did not give me much hope - it seems there is no solution. But before I give up let me just ask again - is there a way ...

Re: Can Audacity be used with Windows 98???
Given the enormous number of people having speed and quality problems with much larger computers, I don't think USB is the way to go. However, assuming your computer is a Deskside and your turntable is an ION, you can probably do a fairly respectable job transferring the songs analog. Stereo RCA to ...

Re: Input dropdown menu
I think this is one of the most common questions on this board. Search for "Stero Mix" and look for the Vista issue. There is a fix out there. However, if you have a Lenovo like I do, then look at the post called "Lenovo Bows to RIAA" and feel my pain.

Trouble Opening Files. Please Help!
I am a new Audacity user. I saved a project and I am now having trouble opening such project. An important project at that. I couldn't remember where I saved the file, so I did a search on my computer. Found the file , but accidentally dragged the file and the data folder to my desktop. When I click...

Re: Fixing oversound
This is called "clipping" - and ideally you should aim to set your levels so that clipping doesn't occur - it sounds horrible and its's often not psooble to fix. Tapes were a little more foorginving you could push the odd peak or two into the red and the physics of tape technology would take car of ...

Re: scribble (static?) sound in cut audio
If you luck out and all the moons and stars line up, the Center Pan Removal tool might work:

(Search the page.)
One of the restrictions of this technique is you get a mono music track at the end, not stereo.

Re: New Kid
Sure, you can do that. If your multi-track recorder has an easy way to import each track individually, then do that. If not, you'll have to record each one separately (and the audio quality will depend on your sound card). Either method will work, but if you can upload the files directly it'll be mu...
