Re: Cannot Get FFMPEG Lame to Install

Thank you, kozikowski! I warned you up front that there is much that I do not know about sound recordings. I thought that Lame was a codec that included FFMPEG and that by installing it I would be able to do what I'm trying to do. I should have stated my problem more simply instead of providing so m...

Re: Audacity file gone-data file still there

the icon for an AUP file looks like the icon for the useless SFK file. Meaning Windows can't figure out either one and thereby assigns "generic" icons that look alike. You might consider telling Windows to reveal file extensions. That helps a lot. MyMusic and MyMusic turn into MyMusic.wav...

Re: A Way To Analyze Audio for DC Offset

everyone was already accustomed to using the Normalize effect to perform this operation.
Yes. Everybody who already knows where the tools, knows where the tool is. Does it show up in a search for DC Removal? It's not in the Index.

Re: Attempting to Record LFN.. Help!

The microphone may not die at 12v, but it wouldn't work right, either. 12v is a standard Phantom Power specification, but it's falling out of favor because it was always a make-do solution adopted only by a subset of makers. 48v has been the standard since the thirties and I suspect your microphone ...

Attempting to Record LFN.. Help!

Hello First let me apologise for the long post, I have attempted to include as much pertinent information as I am able, and as a result it has continued to grow. Secondly, I must admit to my ignorance of sound; let me say that I find the whole subject as perplexing as chemistry, so please be patient...

Re: What type of USB mike would you recommend?

Here are some USB studio condenser mics. As long as you avoid cheap "gaming" or "communications" type microphones, you should be OK. I'd suggest spending around $100 USD (or more). USB mics are very convenient, and you'll save a bit of money compared to buying an inexpensive stu...

Re: How much RAM can Audacity address in Windows 7?

I know the minimum RAM you recommend is 4GB, but is there a maximum that Audacity can use? For example, if I had 16GB, could Audacity use it all? A 32-bit application like Audacity can use 4 GB RAM on a 64-bit Windows OS, which is split into 2 GB user address space and 2 GB kernel address space. ht...

Re: How to make stereo sound to 5.1?

For "real" 5.1 sound you would start with a multi-track recording. The tracks can then be "panned", "filtered" and "delayed" to the appropriate speakers to create the desired spacial effect. If you are starting from a stereo mix, the best that you can do is to...

Re: 'static'-like noise generated in audacity

I think Andy said he didn't really know what he changed beyond installing pavucontrol. I see from a search that installing pavucontrol to fix audio problems on Kubuntu (Ubuntu using the KDE desktop instead of GNOME) is quite common, at least in so far as it can make hidden inputs appear. The proof w...
