Last time I looked the Flatpak builds had problems with external libraries and plug-ins, such as LAME, FFmpeg, and third party plug-ins. Have you checked that these are working? What I can tell you is that LAME and FFMPEG are detected. From the library preferences pane: MP3 ...

The only change i had made on the laptop was installing the FFMpeg library, from the audacity website. FFmpeg isn't used for WAV files, so I think this is a red herring. The version of FFmpeg that you need for Audacity 2.3.3 is listed as: RECOMMENDED ...

I downloaded 2.4.1 via the Linux ppa over 2.2.1 from the ubuntu repositories just for this, but now the HiDPI support is broken and everything is humongous and overlapping and pixelated, tooltips white on white, menu not integrated anymore. Anyway, at least the error message is a little less cryptic...

One of the Audacity developers has been looking into this.
It appears that there has been a problem with the AAC encoder for a long time, but it has been mostly hidden by another bug. That other bug has now been fixed, exposing this bug. This is now logged on the Audacity bug tracker.

... to. I tried the explicit export as per the FAQ as pointed out in the prior msg, but that failed the same way. I reinstalled both Audacity and the FFmpeg code and received the same error. Macbook air / Catalina 10.15.4
