I don't know if you have found the answer yet but I just installed the ffmpeg plug in and then opened an .avi file of a musical video clip and the audio was imported instantly, no sweat!
Hope this helps

Re: Olympus VN4100pc
... if the files won't open in QuickTime or iTunes, you're out of luck. Somebody may make a third party converter package. Google your brains out. ffmpeg and lame are two possibilities. lame is used to convert in and out of MP3. but it can do a lot more than that. The developers were trying to ...

Re: where IS FFmpeg download for Windows
Hi,
I'm having the same problem. Followed your link to "audacityteam.org/manual/index...nstall_the_FFmpeg_Import.2FExport_Library.3F
How do I download and install the FFmpeg Import/Export Library?
...and the link is 403-Forbidden!
Solution?
Many thanks in advance

I don't think that Audacity supports QuickTime files (unless it is supported by ffmpeg, but so far there has been no mention of ffmpeg, so I assume that is not the issue).>>> That did get my attention, too. Re: 1.3.5 problems exporting, wav files end up blank
... again, the whole data in the project will be silenced. As regards 1.3.6 and later, also note there won't be any silencing problem if you use the "FFmpeg-compatible files" filter when importing, because that currently always makes a copy of the data irrespective of the preference setting. Thanks ...

Re: Working with avi files
Yeah - don't have QTPro - need to figure out how to do this with ffmpeg. I've tried straight File>Open and File>Import, doesn't seem to make any difference .... I still have a stand alone audio file when done. Maybe I'll post in ffmpeg forums or VideoHelp.com, ...

<<<is it back to ffmpeg and muxing it together?>>>
I think QuickTime Pro can do all those tricks. QTP will let you do simple split editing and will export in any format QuickTime Supports.
<<<sound out through my headphones.>>>
Audacity > Preferences > Audio I/O > Output
