I don't know if you have found the answer yet but I just installed the ffmpeg plug in and then opened an .avi file of a musical video clip and the audio was imported instantly, no sweat!

How do I download and install the FFmpeg Import/Export Library?

... again, the whole data in the project will be silenced. As regards 1.3.6 and later, also note there won't be any silencing problem if you use the "FFmpeg-compatible files" filter when importing, because that currently always makes a copy of the data irrespective of the preference setting. Yeah - don't have QTPro - need to figure out how to do this with ffmpeg. I've tried straight File>Open and File>Import, doesn't seem to make any difference .... I still have a stand alone audio file when done. Maybe I'll post in ffmpeg forums or VideoHelp.com, ...

I think QuickTime Pro can do all those tricks. QTP will let you do simple split editing and will export in any format QuickTime Supports.
