... thinks you have. WireTap is perfectly able to make AAC files and vanilla Audacity will not be able to play those. You may need to add the FFMpeg plugin to manage those, but start with the Quicktime INFO. Koz

Once Benjamin supplied the ffmpeg5 patch I could run its autogen.sh, run ./configure --disable-dynamic-loading and compile Audacity OK. The Ubuntu FFmpeg was detected and the Libraries preferences buttons for FFmpeg greyed out as expected. The Libraries preferences buttons for MP3 are not greyed ...

... not always PCM uncompressed WAV but may be some heavily size-compressed file inside a WAV container. If anyone has a related problem, try adding FFmpeg to your computer and choose "FFmpeg-compatible files" when you File > Open or File > Import the WAV into Audacity. Gale
