Note also please that I have re-downloaded the ffmpeg dll now about a half-dozen times. I don't THINK that I have a corrupt one.

I tried 'locate' and get the pop up that says "Audacity has automatically detected FFmpeg" The full message is: "Audacity has automatically detected FFmpeg Do you still want to locate them manually? [YES] [NO]" Click on the "NO" button. ...

I get the same prob. Unable to open .WMA after installing FFmpeg. I just downloaded the lastest Audacity beta 1.3.12 and also the latest FFmpeg download(I think) I tried 'locate' and get the pop up that says "Audacity has automatically detected FFmpeg" ...

... as CAF format (according to the OP). Nonetheless, it seems likely that the AIF files contain IMA4 encoded audio. Try importing the files using FFmpeg. -- Bill

... if you experiment by changing the proportion of "hard to encode" material in the file. So for AAC I think you would have to test both FFmpeg AAC and the two iTunes variants of it, bearing in mind FFmpeg AAC has a "quality" control that doesn't explicitly state the bit rate ...
