Try upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12 and install FFmpeg.

Can audacity be used to convert file formats e.g. wma to mp3? This one actually is in the FAQs. ... have single file insanity (everything else works OK), you may be trying to manage a file that Audacity doesn't understand. Try installing Lame and FFMpeg from the same web site. Those packages allow exporting as MP3 and recognition of many, many different file formats. Koz
