Do you have FFMpeg software installed? If it's blank look time, then that could be the problem. Audacity will sometimes open and cheerfully edit a show when it really doesn't understand what the show format is. This leads to insanity ...

Do I need new FFMpeg and lame to upgrade between 1.3.12 and 1.3.13? Do I need to assassinate my Preference File?

... time. Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3. If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software from the same web site. Do not use older software or software from other web sites, even though they may have the same names. Koz

... that iTunes native format was AAC. You might try to skip the iTunes conversion step and use the music cold. You'll still need to install FFMpeg. Audacity has no idea what an "m4a" (AAC) sound tack is. Koz

... As you can see from the links, you can export and import AAC files without converting them if you use Audacity Beta and install the optional FFmpeg library. Gale

they know it is broken but have not had time to fix it yet. Isn't that a very specific issue building Ubuntu 10.04 with an older FFmpeg? Audacity HEAD Unicode Release builds OK for me with Ubuntu's system FFmpeg on Ubuntu 10.10 (Natty is actually 11.04 so the issue isn't all that clear). ...

As bgravato says. Audacity 1.2.6 only supports a very limited range of audio file formats and does not support M4A.
